The MotionX Pattern combines the industry standards found across a variety of common FRC products into a single pattern. Allowing for a better user experience and removing the hassle of teams needing to buy extra hardware.

Hole Pattern

This hole pattern is meant for #8-32 hardware to be used and allows teams to use other products while ensuring a successful integration into their system.

The 2" pitch spacing is widely compatible with a variety of products, making it easier for FRC teams to design and build their robots. Allowing for standard #10-32 hardware to be used.

This configuration allows teams to opt for 1" From Center gears for lightweight or high-speed gearboxes, prioritizing weight and size reduction.

Web Sizing

The web sizing is designed to have bolts sit tangent along the webbing and allowing for extra torque transfer through the sprocket spokes.

The highlighted holes for a #10-32 bolt and 3/8" OD spacer to be used with either 1" or 2" tubing without creating any collisions.

Overview

Belts, chains, and gears are the basis of motion in FRC build systems. Mecanum Wheels

Mecanum wheels allow savvy robot designers to create drivetrains capable of moving in any direction using a standard chassis shape. Simply power each wheel with a different motor and change the directions the wheels spin to get your robot to move in different directions!

These mecanum wheels were designed from the ground up to give the smoothest ride possible. Our construction method allows for a constant contact patch with a narrow profile. Each roller is tailored for the individual wheel diameter, and provides the correct, constant radius. We don't share rollers between wheel types -- these wheels aren't "almost round" -- they're actually round! This smooth-ride provides higher efficiency and reduces wasted power. This is especially important in mecanum drivetrains to provide smooth holonomic motion without high motor current draw.

    How to use Master Links

    Master Links are used to form a continuous loop without the need to use a chain breaker tool and have proved to be an efficient quick-release system during repairs and replacement jobs. Using these Master Links is an easy task and can be done by anyone with a pair of pliers.

    1. Slide the Master Link into position on the chain.

    2. Place the Outer Plate on top of the pins far enough as to expose the grooves on the two pins.

    3. Place the clip on the first pin like shown above.

    4. Slide the clip towards the second pin using pliers and ensure that the clip is secure .

    The holes in the bottom of the Base Tube and top of the Intermediate/Base Tubes are used to pin the Top Blocks and Gearbox to their respective tubes. The holes in the bottom of the Intermediate Tube are used to install the Bottom Blocks, Hardstops, and CF Springs to their respective tubes. The top of the output tube will be determined by the user. This is the recommended spot for the Telescope String to anchor to, as it is the easiest place to do so.

    You will need a few pieces of information when using the WCP Belt Calculator:

    The 1-5/8" and 2” diameter wheels have a 9mm hex bore designed to be stretched onto a standard 1/2" hex shaft. Larger wheels, 3 inches and above, have a 1-inch bore that can be stretched over a MotionX Hub, allowing them to be driven by a hex shaft. This larger bore design also enables you to stretch these wheels over a Round Roller tube to create a strong and lightweight roller.

    Pitch is the measurement from one roller chain pin to another. Popular chain sizes used throughout FRC are the #25 and #35, which have their respective pitches of 0.25" and 0.375"

    Pitch Diameter also known as PD is the circle that is formed while the chain and sprocket are meshed together and which the chain rotates around. If you wish to find the PD, reference the formula below.

    Pitch ÷ sin(180°/Tooth Count)

    The Chain Clearance Diameter is the outer diameter of the sprocket while it is meshed with the chain. Knowing this is crucial when placing sprockets in tight places to ensure that no interference is being created. If you wish to find the Clearance Diameter, reference the formula below, along with an example equation for the sprocket shown above.

    Calculating Center to Center

    When deciding the placement and spacing of your sprocket and chain it is important to keep in mind that the Center to Center distance can be a fully custom measurement to ensure compatibility in your system, or can be decided through a pre-determined chain length.

    The basic rule of thumb when deciding on a custom Center to Center distance is that it should be anywhere from 30-50 times the pitch of the desired chain for optimal usage and should not exceed 80 times the pitch.

    Proper Tension

    The examples below highlight different levels of chain tension, including chains that are too loose, too tight, and the recommended amount of slack for reliable performance in any subsystem.

    An under tensioned chain can lead to inconsistent power transmission, causing the chain to skip teeth or derail from the sprocket entirely. This results in unreliable performance, excessive wear on both the chain and sprockets, and potential damage to surrounding components. Loose chains can also introduce backlash, reducing precision and control in your mechanism.

    An over tensioned chain puts unnecessary stress on the chain, sprockets, bearings, and shafts. This added tension increases friction and wear, leading to premature failure of components. It can also reduce system efficiency by making it harder for motors to spin freely, ultimately impacting overall robot performance and reducing the lifespan of key parts.

    A properly tensioned chain maintains just enough slack to allow smooth rotation while staying firmly engaged with the sprockets. This reduces wear on bearings and shafts, minimizes friction, and ensures reliable power transmission. With the right tension, the system runs efficiently, components last longer, and the risk of skipping or binding is greatly reduced. Resulting in consistent, high-performance operation.

    Ensuring that proper tension is present in a sprocket and chain system is crucial for the sake of system integrity and performance. Achieving proper tension is a fairly simple task to do when using a chain breaker tool and tensioner offered through WCP. Such as the or the .

    Implementing our chain tensioners into your system is a an easy task due to them having the necessary clearance holes for the roller pins. Use the chain breaker tool to partially remove the pin from the chain and lay your selected chain tensioner in place, then simply reset the pin back into place.

    Idlers

    Idlers are yet another way to ensure proper tension is present in a chain and sprocket system as they can be placed either on inside or outside of the chain loop to provide more contact with the sprocket and decrease slack. Adding an idler to the chain loop does not affect the ratio and can actually benefit performance if placed near the driving sprocket as it allows for more meshing.

    Increases the center distance of the pinion.

    You must account for the increase in center distance when using these pinions. For example, a 10T gear on 12T center distance, will act like a 10T gear when you're doing ratio calculations but act like a 12T gear when you're doing center distance calculations.

    Another way to think about it is if you have a 12T (on 12T spacing) gear driving a 60T gear, it can be replaced with a 10T (on 12T spacing) without having to change the center distance. With the 12T (on 12T spacing) gear, the ratio was 5:1 (60/12). With a 10T (on 12T spacing) gear, the ratio is 6:1 (60/10)

After having this problem ourselves, we decided to solve it with the WCP Flipped Gearbox. Add a WCP Bearing Block and you'll be good to go. We made the WCP Flipped Gearbox so that you can make any drivetrain you want.

    Linear Bearings

    These specialty bearings slide axially along a round shaft or tube’s length in order to achieve simple linear motion. Use a set of linear bearings to replace complex radial bearing stack setups and build sliding mechanisms with the strength and rigidity of FRC linear elevators for a fraction of the complexity!

    While our linear bearings work with any shaft or tube material, we recommend thin-wall steel in heavy-use subsystems to decrease wear on the shaft while still maintaining strength and keeping weight low. Alternatively, having replacement shafts or tubes prepared for heavy-use subsystems utilizing linear bearings helps alleviate this problem.

    Standoffs are like spacers, but the internal hole is threaded in order for a machine screw to thread into them for a strong and tight fit. Aluminum standoffs can be used to connect important components in your robot, and our variety of sizes gives you everything you need to make small gearboxes all the way up to large shooter hoods!     Gears can be used to transfer motion from a spinning object to an object you want to rotate (ex: another shaft, a wheel, an arm, etc.). In addition to transferring motion, gears can be used to change the speed and torque inside a mechanism.

    Speed and torque are inversely proportional. This means that as one increases, the other must be reduced. For example, if you decrease speed by 3x then torque will increase by 3x.

    Changing Speed & Torque

    You can change the speed and torque in a gear train by using different sized gears. The size ratio of two meshed gears will determine how much the speed and torque are changed. If two meshed gears are the same size, then speed and torque will remain the same.

    Reducing Speed / Increasing Torque

    In order to reduce speed and increase torque you must drive a gear with a smaller gear. For example, a 12T gear is driving an 84T gear. Since the 84T gear is 7x larger than the 12T gear driving it, the speed will be reduced by 7x while the torque will be increased by 7x.

    In order to increase speed and reduce torque you must drive a gear with a larger gear. For example, a 48T gear is driving a 24T gear. Since the 24T gear is 2x smaller than the 48T gear driving it, the speed will be increased by 2x while the torque will be reduced by 2x.

    Direction Of Rotation

    Gears can also be used to change the direction of rotation. Gears spin in the opposite direction of the gear driving it. For example, if you have a gear train with two gears, the direction of rotation will be the opposite of the input. However, if you have three gears in a drivetrain, the direction of rotation at the output will be the same as the input.

    When To Use Gears

    There are pros and cons to using gears, so it's important to carefully consider your application before electing to use them in your design.

    Here are some examples of applications when you should use gears:

    • The items you need to transfer motion to are close together. Generally speaking, gears are better at transferring motion between items that are close together.

    • You need a large speed reduction in a small space. Gears allow you to make a large amount of reduction in a relatively small space compared to timing belts and chain.

    • You need something to spin in opposite directions. Timing belts and chain will always spin in the same direction. So if you need two shafts to spin in opposite directions, gears are one of the easiest ways to do it.

    When NOT To Use Gears

    • You need to transfer motion to something far away. Using a long gear train to transfer motion to something far away usually weighs more than just using timing belts or chain.

    • High shock loads. Shock loads are extremely high spikes in torque. These can be caused by a number of things like an arm crashing into something. Shock loads can produce spikes in torque many times higher than the mechanism would normally see. since gears transfer motion through a single tooth, they do not handle shock loads as well as timing belts or chain.

    Sometimes you want to add extra spacing to center-to-center distance. The benefit of adding extra spacing to a center-to-center distance is to reduce gear wear and help the gearbox run smoother. However, adding extra spacing does increase backlash in the system.

    Extra distance to add for center to center:

    • Exact Spacing: +0.000"

    • Standard Spacing: +.0015-.003"

    In the context of gears, backlash is the amount a shaft can rotate before it drives a mating gear. In some applications, like a roller intake or conveyor, backlash doesn't greatly affect the performance of the the system.

    However, in some applications like an arm, backlash can be very detrimental since it makes accurate position control much more difficult. A few degrees of backlash can result in inches of variance at the end of a long arm.

    Tooth Spacing

    Another way to think about gear spacing is the sum of the teeth in the gear ratio. You can change the gears in any gear ratio, as long as the sum of the two gears remains the same. For example:

    WCP sells pocketed versions of steel and aluminum gears for maximum weight savings. On average each pocketed gear is 50% lighter than the unpocketed version!     Addendum Modified Gears

    Addendum modifying gears is when you change the tooth profile to reduce undercut, which strengthens the tooth. When gears are addendum modified, it changes its Pitch Diameter, which changes the gear spacing. For example, an addendum modified 11T gear could be on 12T spacing. This means that the gear acts like an 11T gear when doing ratio calculations, but acts like a 12T gear when doing center-to-center calculations.

    WCP sells a number of Motor Pinions that are addendum modified. This allows teams to change the tooth count on a motor pinion without having to change the corresponding gear.
