# Basic Features

## PlanetaryX

The PlanetaryX was built with a wide range of FRC use cases in mind, incorporating features that make it adaptable to a variety of applications. Many of these features are highlighted in the sections below.

### Input Block - Mounting Holes

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Front Side" %}
The Input Block includes four #10-32 tapped holes, highlighted below, for custom mounting options. These holes follow the [1/2" Pitch Spacing Standard ](/welcome/frc-build-system/system-standards.md#id-1-2-pitch-spacing)used across our product line, allowing for seamless integration with other WCP components.

<figure><img src="https://3780174091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FHsaEh283Wbjq6h8k68Rq%2Fuploads%2F85Hs3motqZoezUou5D4j%2FPX%20-%20Basic%20Features%20-%20Input%20Block%20Front.svg?alt=media&amp;token=3c1782e5-94ae-47db-834a-9c2a0611c285" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Back Side" %}
The Input Block features two #10-32 clearance holes, highlighted below, that support motors with a 2" bolt circle mounting pattern. Alternatively, these holes can be used to directly mount the Input Block by capturing #10-32 nuts in the integrated pockets, allowing it to be securely attached to a surface while following the [1/2" Pitch Spacing Standard](/welcome/frc-build-system/system-standards.md#id-1-2-pitch-spacing).

{% hint style="warning" %}
The Nut Pocket feature can **ONLY** be used if direct [Motor Mounting](/welcome/gearboxes/planetaryx/assembly-instructions/planetaryx/motor-mounting.md) will not be done and an Input Coupler is going to be used during the [Shaft Installation](/welcome/gearboxes/planetaryx/assembly-instructions/planetaryx/input-coupler-installation.md) process.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="https://3780174091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FHsaEh283Wbjq6h8k68Rq%2Fuploads%2FkNmORgUBSuZ0UJVM9VOa%2FPX%20-%20Basic%20Features%20-%20Input%20Block%20Back.svg?alt=media&amp;token=8fc95c23-de06-46e4-af8e-de86c7e8c862" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Side Mounting" %}
The Input Block features two distinct Side Mounting hole patterns with #10-32 tapped holes, highlighted below. These threaded holes can then be used to mount the Input Block while following the [1/2" Pitch Spacing Standard](/welcome/frc-build-system/system-standards.md#id-1-2-pitch-spacing).

{% hint style="info" %}
Due to each stage of the Planetary X being 0.75" thick, the hole highlighted in orange in the image below is intentionally offset by 0.25". This ensures that at least one hole always aligns with the 1/2" Pitch.&#x20;

For Example:

* **Odd number of stages**, the **center hole (highlighted in&#x20;**<mark style="color:orange;">**Orange**</mark>**)** will align to the 1/2" Pitch.
* **Even number of stages**, the **two outer holes (highlighted in&#x20;**<mark style="color:blue;">**Blue**</mark>**)** will align to the 1/2" Pitch.
  {% endhint %}

{% endtabs %}

### Output Block - Hex Socket

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Front" %}
The 1/2" Hex Socket features a standard 1/2" hex output bore, providing seamless compatibility with the WCP 1/2" hex ecosystem and other common FRC components. This also makes it easy to integrate the PlanetaryX into a variety of robot mechanisms.

The #10-32 clearance hole, highlighted below, is used to secure the output shaft and prevent the 1/2" Hex shaft from backing out over time due to vibration or repeated cycles.

{% hint style="warning" %}
If the bolt is threading into the Output Shaft, it must be inserted through the clearance hole from the backside and tightened against the shaft to maintain axial retention during operation.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="https://3780174091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FHsaEh283Wbjq6h8k68Rq%2Fuploads%2F8jOoYQXDlebQNqSHXxLv%2FPX%20-%20Basic%20Features%20-%20Hex%20Socket%20Front.svg?alt=media&amp;token=4d9d46d0-5656-4956-a21b-01821a8f7b59" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The 1/2" Hex Socket also features six 3mm holes on a 0.75" Bolt Circle for the included 3mm dowel pins, as shown below. This optional interface increases torque capacity by providing additional resistance to rotational shear.

<figure><img src="https://3780174091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FHsaEh283Wbjq6h8k68Rq%2Fuploads%2FECG7Vp16bQpjSYciz9D5%2FPX%20-%20Basic%20Features%20-%20Hex%20Socket%20Front%20(Dowel%20Pins).svg?alt=media&amp;token=7955d6d7-afef-43cd-8ca2-a9cf14b9414d" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endtab %}

{% tab title="Back" %}
The Back Side of the 1/2" Hex Socket features an integrated pocket that is meant to capture a #10-32 nut. This pocket allows for a quick and easy removal or swap of the Output Shaft.

{% hint style="warning" %}
The Nut Pocket feature is intended to be used only when a bolt is long enough to go through the entire shaft length, through the Hex Socket fully thread into the captured #10-32 nut.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="https://3780174091-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FHsaEh283Wbjq6h8k68Rq%2Fuploads%2FzI1jk9lkqd6ouiLveoal%2FPX%20-%20Basic%20Features%20-%20Hex%20Socket%20Back.svg?alt=media&amp;token=7ab6a01c-2ebb-411c-adee-b70a48af8425" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% endtab %}
{% endtabs %}

### Encoder Compatibility

The integrated bolt circle on the Output Block provides a simple mounting solution for the WCP ThroughBore Encoder as shown below.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Do not overtighten the Throughbore Encoder mounting bolt. Excessive torque may deform or compress the encoder housing
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
When face mounting the PlanetaryX with the Through Bore Encoder, use 3/4" L spacers (WCP-0217) between the mounting surface and the PlanetaryX face.
{% endhint %}
